A container on a private drive, sized for the rooms you are actually clearing and held for long enough that nobody has to rush a weekend.
A household clearout is the slowest kind of loading there is, and the container has to be specified for that rather than for raw capacity. Material does not arrive in a single push. It arrives in decisions. Somebody opens a wardrobe, thinks about it, closes it again and comes back on Sunday. A box sized for a contractor and held for three days simply does not match that rhythm.
The practical consequence is that homeowners are usually better served by a medium container held over two weekends than by a large one held briefly. Volume is rarely the binding constraint on a domestic job. Time is. When we ask how many people will actually be lifting and which days they are available, that is what the question is for.
Rooms are more useful than yardage for estimating at home. A garage that has absorbed twenty years of storage commonly yields between eight and twelve cubic yards once the shelving comes out. A loft clearance of boxes, luggage and retired furniture tends to run six to ten. A three bedroom property emptied completely, including soft furnishings, usually lands between twenty and thirty.
Add roughly a fifth to whatever you calculate, because domestic material packs terribly. Furniture creates voids that cannot be filled, and nobody dismantles a wardrobe at nine on a Sunday evening. Customers who break down bulky items as they load recover a surprising amount of that lost space, and it is the single habit that most often saves a swap out.
Domestic drives were not engineered for this weight, so protection is standard rather than optional. Planking goes under the container rails to spread the load, and the truck is positioned so its rear axles sit over supported slab rather than an unsupported edge. On a hot day an older asphalt drive will still take a light impression, which is why the placement is photographed before the driver leaves.
Irrigation heads sitting just below grade at the edge of a drive are the most commonly damaged thing on a residential job, and they are invisible to a driver who has never seen the property. Point them out, along with septic lids, drain covers and any shallow service run, and the placement is chosen around them.
Most of what leaves a house can travel in a general box, but a short list cannot. Paint that is still liquid, solvents, garden chemicals and pool products are excluded. So are propane cylinders, vehicle batteries, tyres and any appliance still holding refrigerant. Fluorescent tubes and electronic waste each have their own handling route.
Mattresses, upholstered sofas and large white goods sit in between. They are accepted in most containers but frequently carry a per item handling charge, because the receiving facility has to pull them off the sorting line. None of this is hidden. Mention what is coming out of the house when you book and the quote reflects it from the start.
Step up in capacity when the volume proves larger than the first estimate suggested.

15 Yard Dumpster RentalWhere access rather than volume becomes the deciding constraint on the placement.
Small Dumpster RentalThe separated stream option that reaches a cheaper gate when the load stays clean.
Recycling Dumpster RentalScheduling and period differences worth checking before the booking is confirmed.
Mini Dumpster RentalTell us which rooms you are clearing, what surface the box will sit on and which weekends you have help. You will get a size and a period that match the way the work will really happen.
